Our special thanks to them.\r\n\r\n[;] Towards midnight - much too early for us - when the celebration had come to an end as the band had been ordered to depart for Hamstead, everyone left reflecting of how well this celebration, even without a programme, had gone and that an unforgettable year had ended, even if there had been also difficult and unpleasant times, and - that we are a year closer to our loved ones.\r\n\r\n\r\nNewclose\r\n\r\nNewclose - a hostel which houses 80 men is situated in deep isolation south of Newport.  Leading from the well-known mirror* a path leads to the hostel which   leaning backwards, snuggles against a hill.  Plants flourish abundantly in the small hostel garden.  Exotic trees with  wonderful blossoms surround it and even now display a markedly summery appearance.  The mooing of grazing cows on the slopes is normally the only noise far and wide.  At dawn the small hostel becomes lively.  Different prisoner of war groups allocated to various bigger and smaller work squads are preparing for their daily tasks.  At 7.00 am the single farm workers leave the hostel to attend to their milking duties on the farms.  The few 10 men strong  much liked work squads mount lorries which ferry them to their work places, working to the melody 'picking potatoes'.\r\n\r\n[;] Individual leisure time is mainly used for personal hygene, mending of clothes and private study.  Systematic leisure planning is impossible because of work assignments which are weather dependent, harvesting for example.\r\n\r\n[;]  The Sunday hours are filled by football, chess, Skat and table tennis.\r\n\r\n[;]  Beatrice  -  Avenue\r\n\r\n[;] The hostel is a camp with 50 men, situated at the southern edge of the town East Cowes and possessing a wonderful view over West and East Cowes and the sea.  Apart from the round tents the camp also boasts a barrack for dining and reading.\r\n\r\n[;] All comrades are employed  in road construction and underground workings.  All sorts of professions you find here, even those which never knew the harshness of axe and shovel.  Even though they found it hard in the beginning, they refused to be beaten.\r\n\r\n[;] A coach takes the men to the various sites.  After changing at the site they receive their tools from 'Teacarle'.   While they do their allocated tasks,  'Teacarle' stays in the hut in order to prepare their tea for the short breakfast break at 10 o'clock.  Lunch is eaten at 12 o'clock.  At 15.00 hours our 'Teacarle' awaits us again with a warm drink and punctually at 17.00 hours starts the even nicer coach ride, that is the ride home to the hostel.\r\n\r\n[;] After supper at 18.00 hours the indefatigable meet for a round of skat in the barrack, others have chess competitions.  In this hostel chess is a favourite game. - Can we perhaps sometimes have a chess tournament with other hostels??????\r\n\r\n[;] There are daily radio broadcasts - news and programmes for prisoners of war attentively followed by individuals, as well as newspaper reviews twice a week which are produced by a comrade.\r\n\r\n [;]  He who is interested in the  English language finds lots of opportunities to broaden his knowledge during four hours a week.  Even sport comes into its own, but it is not always possible due to the weather.  As long as the weather was fine, swimming was the favourite sport.\r\n\r\n[;] Sunday mornings are reserved for church service.  Catholics attend together with the English congregation in the catholic church.   Protestant worship is also held in church.  The sermons are translated by an interpreter. The POWs, distributed into different smaller and larger commandos, prepare themselves for their daily work. At 7.00 o'clock the single drivers leave the hostel to do their milking duty at the farms. The few popular 10 men commandos are taken to their working places by truck to work intensely singing to the tune \"picking potatoes\".\r\nSpare time remaining for the individuals is filled first of all with personal hygiene, maintenance of the clothes and self-study. Planned recreational activities cannot be undertaken, unfortunately, due to the harvest which is influenced by the wheather. Soccer, chess, skat and table tennis fill the Sunday hours.\r\nBeatrice - Avenue:\r\nThe hostel consists of a tent camp of 50 men, at the south end of the city of East Cowe, with a splendid view across East and West Cowe and the sea. Beside the round tents, the camp features barracks for sojourn, reading and eating. All comrades are deployed in street works and underground work. Totally different professions are represented, even such which have had nothing to do with the hardness of the pick and the shovel up to now. Although it was hard for them at first, they still kept their chins up. The way to the place of work is covered with travel busses. After the men have changed at the work place, the \"tea Charly\" hands them their equipment. While they are doing their work, the \"tea Charly\" remains in the hut to prepare the tea for the short breakfast time around 10 o'clock. Lunch is taken around 12.30. At 3 p.m., our \"tea Charly\" comes up again with another warm drink, and at 5 p.m. sharp, the actually more beautiful bus trip begins, namely the way back to the hostel. After dinner at 6 p.m., the tireless sit down together to play skat in the recreation room, others play chess against each other. Chess is a very popular game in this hostel. Maybe we could arrange chess tournaments with other hostels or the camp??????????- The daily radio broadcasts - news, POW programmes - are pursued closely by the men, as well as the reading of newspapers which is conducted twice a week by a comrade. Those who are interested in the English language get the good opportunity to do so during four hours a week. Even sports come into their own, although the weather is sometimes against it. Das \"Muhen\" der auf den Haengen weidenden[;]Kuehen, ist meist das einzige Geraeusch weit und breit. Lebhaft wird es in dem klei-[;]nen Hostel im Morgengrauen. Die in verschieden kleineren und groesseren Kommandos[;]eingeteilten P.o.W's ruesten sich fuer ihre taegliche Arbeit. Um 7.00 Uhr verlas-[;]sen die Einzelfarmer das Hostel um ihren Melkdienst beim Farmer ausfuehren zu koen-[;]ne. Ausser den Rundzelten verfuegt das Lager aber noch ueber eine Auf-[;]enthalts- Lese- und Speisebaracke.[;]Alle Kameraden sind im Strassenbau und Tiefbau eingesetzt. Die verschie-[;]denartigsten Berufe sind hier vertreten, auch solche, die bisher nicht die Haer-[;]te der Picke und Schaufel kannten. Obwohl es ihnen anfangs schwer fiel, haben sie[;]sich doch nicht unterkriegen lassen.[;]Der Weg zur Arbeitsstelle wird in einem Reisebuss zurueckgelegt. Nach-[;]dem sich die Maenner auf dem Arbeitsplatz umgekleidet haben, gibt der \"Teekarle\" das Arbeitsgeraet heraus. Waehrend sie ihre ihnen zugewiesenen Arbeiten verrich-[;]ten, bleibt der Teekarle in der Huette, um den Tee fuer die kurze Fruehstueckszeit[;] gegen 10. 00 Uhr aufzuschuetten. Die Mittagsmahlzeit wird um 12.30 eingenommen. Um[;]15.00 wartet unser Teekarl noch 'mal mit einem warmen Getraenk auf, und puenktlich[;] 17.00 Uhr beginnt die eigentlich noch schoenere Fahrt mit dem Buss, naemlich die[;]Heimfahrt ins Hostel.[;]Nach dem Abendessen um 18.00 Uhr setzen sich die Unermuedlichen im Unter-[;]haltungsraum zum Skat zusammen, andere tragen Schachwettspiele aus. Das Schach-[;]spiel ist in diesem Hostel ein beliebtes Spiel. Ob wir mal Schachturniere[;]mit anderen Hosteln oder mit dem Camp austragen koennen??????????-[;]Die taeglichen Radiosendungen - Nachrichten- Kriegsgefangenensendungen-[;]werden von Einzelnen mit Spannung verfolgt, ebenso die Zeitungsschau, die zweimal[;]woechentlich von einem Kameraden durchgefuehrt wird.[;]Wer sich fuer die englische Sprache interessiert, findet reichlich Ge-[;]legenheit, in 4 Arbeitsstunden woechentl. sein Wissen zu erweitern. Sogar der Sport[;]kommt zu seinem Recht, doch nicht immer steht er in der Gunst des Wetters. Solange[;]das Wetter gut war, war der Schwimmsport der beliebteste.[;]Der Sonntagvormittag ist dem Gottesdienst gewidmet. Die Katholiken neh-[;]men an dem Gottesdienst in der katholischen Kirche gemeinsam mit der engl. Gemeinde[;]teil. Der protestantische Gottesdienst findet gleichfalls in der Kirche statt. Die[;]Predigten werden von dem Dolmetscher uebersetzt. In Abst\u00e4nden von einem Monat besucht[;]und erfreut uns das Lagerorchester mit seinem immer neuaufgestellten Programm, um[;]uns aus dem Alttag herauszuheben. "}}]
