At a point 2 1/2 miles from Muirkirk and 120 yds E of Marchhouse (a cottage near the roadside) the road contractor noted that a fall of sand from the right hand bank of the road had exposed a collared urn (2). I reached (a) and subsequent excavation showed that the urn, which was inverted over a cremation with a bronze awl (1) a pygmy vessel (3) a bone pin (4) and an unworked piece of green chert (5) had lain beneath the centre of a cairn. The southern part of the cairn had been demolished by the construction of the original roadway and had disturbed another cremation, the scattered remains of which, in the form of burnt bones and sherds of another cinerary urn (6) were discovered in the 1924 excavation.
