Reference (c) quotes a letter from Robert Ballingail dated 14 September 1866 to the Secretary of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland (at that time John Suart and J.A. Smith shared the office) in which the writer repeats the information given by (a) adding that the three dozen rings were all looped on to one - in a bunch. He also encloses a drawing of the armlet in the possession of the gentleman of Islay. Reference (c) suggests that an armlet in the NMA, provenanced only as from the Western Isles (FE 52) has several features which suggest that it is the same armlet. Ref (a) noted the Western Isles armlet, without connecting it with the Coul find, and reported that it had recently been sold to a jeweller in Edinburgh.
