Baleman on 12 July 1845. A pit, cut 3ft deep into rock near the centre of the barrow was covered by a roof of roughly corbelled stones. The floor of the pit was covered by a layer of charcoal (4) at least 2 inches thick ; upon this stratum lay a bull's skull (5) and several other of its bones (6). Above this were found sherds of two Beakers (2-3) a small bronze awl (1) the skull of a child and a few scattered bones of an adult. A few bones of deer and dog were found in the pit (7).
