A late Bronze Age occupation level lay beneath the late Roman signal station. No traces of dwellings were found; but there were 40+ rubbish pits, several cooking places associated with 'pot-boilers', and evidence of bronze casting, weaving and other industrial activities. Two socketed axes of 'Yorkshire' type were found (1-2) on the occupation level and fragments of two further socketed axes (3). A fragment of a fifth axe (4) was found in one of the pits. Other bronzes found were the blade of a tanged collared chisel (5) a socketed gouge (6) three nail-headed pins (7) part of an awl (8) 3 plain rings (9) bracelet with overlapping terminals (10) a casting jet (11) metal cake (12) and dross (13) from bronze smelting. A single object of iron was found, a plain rod, probably part of a pin (14). Other finds included pottery (15-16) spindle whorls (17) jet bracelets (18) other objects of jet and shale (19-21) a perforated whetstone (22) a saddle-back quern (23) a rough earthenware crucible (24) two beads (25) a pottery disc (26) flint flakes and implements (27) and bones of horse, ox, sheep and pig (28).
