It had been discovered accidentally when, in the course of deep ploughing on a gravel knoll c. 300 metres NE of Allerwash Farm, the plough hit the coverstone, breaking off a piece large enough for the interiors to be seen and identified as such. The cist had been set in a roughly oval pit, and contained the fragmentary and disarticulated bones of the lower half of a young adult, probably female. These remains had been laid on a bed of rushes to give the impression of a crouched or flexed burial : part of the pelvis and tibia were made to serve as head & arms and the remaining bones arranged to give an impression of the legs, with the feet detached & some way from their natural position. A bronze dagger (1) lay in the cist, covered by a stone slab, which had once had a second bronze object on top of it, for both sides of the slab were deeply stained by verdigris. Near the butt-end of the dagger were two minute fragments of bronze strip (2) which may have formed part of a mounting for a sheath, of which , however, no trace remained.
