The finder  stated that there were remains of silk cords attached to the loop of one of the axes, and believed it was a relic attached to Colonel Stuart's flagstaff. There is a tradition that Colonel Stuart hid arms and flags under the boulder in the mid-eightheenth century. According to Mr R. Ross Noble, Curator of the Highland Folk Museum, Kingussie a bronze spearhead was associated with the axes.
