They saw the hilt of one of the swords sticking out of the bank, about 3 ft below  the surface and 2 ft above the bed of the stream. On digging out the bank they found the second sword and the gold lock ring. The boys said the swords broke as they pulled them out. Some pieces were missing when the find was first reported, but these were found about 18 months later when the loose soil in the area was sifted by the then Curator of Bowes Museum.
