Piggott while examining the area before undertaking rescue excavations of barrows on Launceston Down in advance of military excavations. A series of trenches had been cut across the down during the 1914-18 war for training purposes. At one point one of these trenches cut through the small group of barrows excavated in 1864 by the Rev. J. Austen - (Barrows G. 19 a-f). Near here, exposed in the side of the trench were three urns (2-4) containing cremated bones. Among the burnt material in one of these (2) was a fragment of a spearhead.
