Because of its proximity to an MBA settlement excavated in 1977-79 it seemed possible that the circular feature could have been related to it. Excavation to test this hypothesis started in February 1981. Four metres outside the E. perimeter of the feature a pit was found containing the completely articulated bones of an ox (17). Close by were two stake-holes and a hearth. No pottery was found in these features but the flint flakes 16 found probably indicate a prehistoric date. Four further pits were discovered, outside the E. perimeter, all containing a cremation, three of them under inverted EBA urns (5-7) and the fourth accompanied by a bronze awl (1). The interior of the feature revealed a stratified soil, varying in depth from 3 to 8 cms, containing abraded Beaker, Deverel-Rimbury, Iron Age and RB potsherds. (12-15). Inside the E. edge of the feature, and close to the pits outside the perimeter a further six pits were discovered. In two of the pits cremations were found, two under inverted collared urns (8-9). One cremation was also accompanied by a bronze awl (2) and two bone awls (3-4). The remaining pits contained child inhumations, two with Food Vessels (10-11).
