Piggott. The awl (1) described as a 'pin' in (a) was found in pit 3, under the centre of the barrow, with a cremation. Pit 3 was lined with carbonised material later identified as oak. It was thought that the cremated bones had been wrapped up in some organic material secured by the awl, as the bones were clean and in a compact mass, unmixed with the surrounding soil. Pit 3 was one of 3 oval pits cut into the old ground surface beneath the centre of the barrow. Pit 1 was sterile and Pit 2 contained an urn (2) with a cremation.
