He lifted it and recognising it to be a sword (1) contacted the appropriate authorities, following which the site was designated under the Protection of Wrecks Act 1973. In 1978 and 1979 a systematic search of the whole area was undertaken by Baker & Muckleroy with volunteers from sub-aqua clubs. By the end of the 1979 season a total of seven bronzes had been recovered, the sword (1) and blades (2-5) being found within 40 metres of each other in shallow water, and the palstaves (6-7) within 20 metres of each other, over 100 metres further off-shore. The site is being kept under observation and judgement is suspended as to whether this is a wreck deposit or not.
