In March 1960 an area 15 x 20 ft was excavated around the pit by D. Britton, H.R. Edwardson and I.H. Longworth. All the soil was sifted and a further 2,700 pieces of bronze were found, making a total of over 6,500 pieces of bronze, weighing about 200 lbs. The recording of the rate at which finds of potsherds and bronze decreased away from the pit suggests that only a few fragments may not have been recovered.
