It should, in our view, have been wound up following the collapse of the USSR in 1991. It is not now and ever has been a force for peace. Instead it has continued to act as a belligerent presence in the world. In recent years, NATO has been involved in many questionable military attacks. One of those unsanctioned assaults, on Belgrade in former 'Yugoslavia', compelled Alex Salmond famously, and rightly, to condemn it as \"an unpardonable folly\".\r\nNATO powers also conducted the illegal war in Iraq when in 2002 Tony Blair lied to the British people about the invasion's purposes - upwards of 600,000 Iraqis have now been killed.\r\nNATO troops are currently occupying Afghanistan, and have been for ten years, against the express wishes of its people under one of its many misnamed front organisations, the International Security and Assistance Force [ISAF].\r\nTens of thousands of innocent Afghan civilians have now died as a country of 33 million people is held responsible for the crimes they did not commit. Last year NATO declared war on Libya under the pretence of defending human rights, when in reality it's objective was again to effect illegal 'regime change' on a sovereign nation and secure oil supplies for western firms. It is now itching to fire its triggers again with the same objectives for Syria.\r\n\r\n2 NATO is an effect the military wing of the neo-liberal bankers and corrupt multinationals who have ruined our economy, plunged us into the worst recession in 80 years, and imposed cuts, unemployment and untold economic misery on billions of people across the globe.\r\n\r\n3 NATOs 'first strike' commitment means its nuclear 'weapons of mass destruction' are primed and ready for use without provocation and woe betide anyone who gets in its way! Scots have made it abundantly clear for decades that we want NATO's nuclear weapons removed from our soil forthwith. We are collectively ashamed to be one of the only nine 'barbaric' missiles.\r\n\r\nJoining NATO would lock Scotland into threatening the world with nuclear annihilation and support US military aggression across the globe. \r\n\r\nIt would mean Scottish soldiers would again be sent to fight and die in immoral and illegal imperialist wars.\r\n\r\nFor 50 years the SNP has found that idea repugnant. Now however it says it wishes to be part of this out dated alliance of belligerents and warmongers. If it changes policy on this matter it will find itself lining up beside the rest of the warmongers and lose another of its distinction advantages from Labour, Lib-Dems and the Tories.\r\n\r\nThe SSP will continue to offer a voice against NATO membership for Scotland.
