A man who refused to compromise his principles and was rewarded by the electorate of Falkirk West with the largest majority in Scotland in both the 1999 and 2003 Scottish Parliamentary elections.\r\n\r\nLittle must Dennis have thought when he retired in 2007 that he would be back in the front line of Scottish politics as a prominent member of the pro-independence organisation, YES Scotland, but the former parliamentarian is relishing his new role.\r\n\r\nDennis said; \"September's referendum is a crucial moment in the history of our country and I am delighted to play a part in helping to shape Scotland's future.\r\n\r\nHaving had the privilege of serving the people of the Falkirk area at both Westminster and Holyrood, I have no doubt at all that Scotland would have higher standards of social justice if the Scottish Parliament had the full powers of independence, like most other countries in the world. \r\n\r\n\"Scotland is a wealthy country which can afford to be independent, a fact now grudgingly acknowledged by those campaigning for the status quo. In fact, when you consider what is happening to us all at the hands of the UK Government, you have to ask yourself if we can afford not to vote YES in September.\r\n\r\n\"Voting yes in the referendum is not a vote for the SNP or any other political party. It is a vote to empower the people of Scotland to elect a government of their choice. That would help to build a better Scotland, a more prosperous Scotland. It would also enable us to play a full part in the international community to help build a better world.\"\r\n\r\nDennis Canavan was an MP and MSP who always put the people first and that is a principle Dennis brings to the referendum campaign.\r\n\r\n'Voting Yes is a vote to empower the people of Scotland to elect a Government of their choice.'\r\n\r\nLOCAL YOUNG PEOPLE TO THE FORE\r\nPAGE 2"}}]
