After the defeat of the Central Powers in World War I, the southern part of Tyrol was annexed by Italy, tearing Tyrol apart. U.S. President's Wilson \"Fourteen Points\" which called for the adjustment of Italy's borders along \"cleary recognizable lines of nationality\" was blatantly disregarded by Rome, which desired to possess the militarily important Brenner Pass.\r\n\r\nAt first, the Italian king promised to respect the language and culture of the German- and Ladin- speaking Tyroleans. But after only after few years, the fascists seized power and started an oppressive Italianization campaign to forcibly assimilate South Tyroleans by closing German Schools, forbidding speaking German in public and introducing fake Italian-sounding place names. After World War II, the oppression ended, even though the Italian-sounding place names, fascist monuments and even some fascist laws remained and remain so even today.\r\n\r\nThe present\r\n\r\nToday South Tyrol is nominally autonomous Province of Italy. The Italian Government has been violated South Tyrol's autonomy for years now, resulting in a myriad of South Tyrolean appeals to the Constitutional Court. Unfortunately the Italian judicial system is notoriously slow, which means that the appeal will not be heard in the near future. Moreover Italian state authorities are often unwilling or unable to provide services to South Tyroleans in German even though required to do so by law. With Italy's economy collasping, violations of South Tyrol's Autonomy Statute by the Italian government have increased, which eventually will leave South Tyrol with an autonomy in name only, which will spell doom for South Tyroleans as a people.\r\n\r\nThe future\r\n\r\nSelf-determination for South Tyrol. Self-determination is democracy. Democracy shall never be illegal.\r\n\r\nSOUTH TYROL CATALUNYA\r\nSCOTLAND FLANDERS\r\ntogether we are strong\r\nwww.iatz.org\r\n\r\nGudtiroler Gdhukenbund\r\nwww.schuetzen.com"}}]
